LA PLATA COMMUNITY PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH
Christian Education at CPC
Many Christian Education opportunities have been available for all throughout the years. In the mid-1970s, Sunday School classes held before Worship included Nursery, Preschool & Kindergarten, Grades 1-3, Grades 4-6, Junior High, Senior High, Young Adults, the 5050 Class, the Westminster Gleaners Class, and the King’s Daughters Class. The King’s Daughters’ Class, organized 1913, was the first organized adult Bible Class in La. The class consisted of the elderly ladies in the church and was known for sponsoring money-making projects to aid the church financially, particularly for the church parlor and kitchen. As years went by, membership grew smaller, so in 1986, those in the King’s Daughters’ Class were invited to join the Westminster Gleaners Class. How it is that their former classroom (a small room just off the sanctuary) became a kitchenette, allowing for beverages and snacks for socials held under the balcony in recent years. The Worship Committee prepares Communion there.
In 1952, the Westminster Gleaners Class was formed the union of the Westminster Class and the Gleaners Class. The new class continued providing many benevolent services, as the previous classes did, and also sponsored a child in Korea. They were a key factor in the church supporting the National Major Mission Fund in 1979. The class had monthly family socials in Fellowship Hall. As membership grew smaller, the Westminster Gleaners Class was invited to join the 50/50 Class in 2004. When Rev. Harold Johnson was pastor at CPC in the early 1950s, the 50/50 Class was organized 1951. This class was primarily for young married couples. It was very in various church activities and hosted Valentine parties for the church family, as well as serving refreshments for the Children’s Christmas Programs. The 50/50 Class was honored worship in 2005 for over 50 years of service. The class continued meeting until 9—approximately 68 years of Bible Study and fellowship.
Over the years, there have been several classes for young adults. The Seekers was organized in 1984 while Rev. Tim McClain pastor. The Seekers Class hosted an All-Church Picnic with a roasted pig, a pie auction, ice cream, and volleyball games on the church lawn. The class hosted special events for several years—such as a Sweetheart Event, a Christmas Program, another All-Church Picnic, a box lunch social, and an Advent Festival with tree trimming and caroling followed by a soup supper for all. The Seekers Class continued until 1997.
New classes emerged in 5, including “Parenting” taught by Dr. Terry TenBrink and “Praise” by Dr. Lou Wollenberg. In 1996, Pastor John Carswell began a new group, “Upstairs Fellowship Group” (adult Bible study). In 2000, Pastor John and his wife, Lisa, taught “Home Builders”—a couples group that met for supper and a Bible lesson on marriage building. Other young adult were held from 2005 to 2007.
In 1978, the nursery was redecorated by La Plata R Art Teacher Ann Bullock and ten of her Art II students. The mural was restored in 1996 by artists Ann Bullock, Geri Moore, and Joan Ferry. Here are pictures of their beautiful work.

In 2005, our Christian Education experienced wonderful growth and excitement as “God’s Gang” was born the dedication and hard work of several blessed parents who said “yes” to God’s calling for the youth of our church. The result was Children’s Church, Wednesday evening meetings, and a Youth Christmas Service that brought revival to the entire congregation. A highlight the following year was a hayride and wiener roast at the home of Craig and Becky Dawson. The youth led a worship service in December and served as excellent teachers to all of us.

Fun times enjoying the fall weather with a hayride and campfire.
In 2008, there a reduction in Sunday School attendance, with only the 50/50 class continuing to meet on Sunday mornings. The 50/50 class had engaging discussions on various Biblical topics and studied the books of Revelation, Ephesians, and James, as well as a verse-by-verse study of the book of Romans. Two confirmation classes were held in 2015, taught by Becky Dawson, with 8 students attending the High School Class and three students in the Elementary Class. Seven students were baptized during worship, while the other students had already been baptized as infants. During Pastor Jeff Carter’s service at CPC, he facilitated adult Sunday School classes before worship on Sundays.
Presbyterian Ministry/Community Christian Youth/La Plata Youth Group
In1986, the Presbyterian Youth Ministry (PYM) met in Fellowship Hall in the “Oasis,” with Craig Dawson as the director for Bible study, fun, and food. The group held fundraisers to raise money for a trip to Chicago in August. Ten people traveled to the sights and worship at the Fourth Presbyterian Church in Downtown Chicago. Diana Yoakum (PY President) represented our church at the “1986 Youth Triennium” at Purdue University in Indiana.
In the following years, the PYM organized fundraisers (Fast-a-thon, Dinner Theatre, Grounds-keeping, and gifts) to earn money for their annual trips. One year, they visited Eagle’s Nest Camp, Six Flags, and spent a day in St. Louis. The next year, they traveled to Kansas City and to Stubbins Children’s Home in Moberly, also raising money to help members attend church camp. They collected over 2,000 aluminum cans for the of Sharing, assembled kits for the festival, provided funds to support La Plata Christian Ministries, and purchased ceiling and lights for the upstairs Sunday school rooms.
One highlight of 1990 was a trip for Matt Turner, Jeremy Matteson, and Greg Wood to Asheville, NC, to work on a Habitat for Humanity project, where they also helped serve breakfast at a homeless shelter where they stayed. Throughout the year, PYM studied the Gospel of John, group building, and how to handle stress, among other topics. This was the last year for PYM.
In 1995, a new youth group, Community Christian Youth (CCY), was organized. night meetings were held at either CPC or the Christian Church for junior and senior high students. The leaders were Jerry & Penny Wood, Danny & Becky Bunch, and Carl & Koni Hagar.
In 1996, Craig Dawson, Shawn Dawson, and Nic Gorham traveled to Mexico to help build homes with former pastor Greg Wood’s youth group from Richmond, Virginia. This the first time La Plata Youth participated in a long-distance “hands” mission trip. It marked the beginning of 13 years of LYG youth having the opportunity to be missionaries, guided by outstanding parents and leaders.

The LYG’s activities the next few years included studying a video series, “Live on the Edge” by Dr. James Dobson, an overnight lock-in for 50 people, a trip to Six Flags, Festival of Sharing “Youth Fest” to pack kits and a prayer vigil to raise money for Hannah Hartsock. A mission trip to Tennessee in cooperation with the Mountain T.O.P organization gave them an opportunity to minister to the elderly and poor in Jamestown, TN. They attended an Al Denson concert in Bethel, MO. Lance Jackson was a young adult leader in 1998. Another mission trip to Jamestown, TN was taken in 1999 by 20 youth and 5 leaders. Also, the group was blessed to participate in SWAT (Spiritual Warfare and Training), which was a summer-long program of evangelism, music and Bible study, led by Christian Songwriter/Singer Al Denson. This was held at Heartland Community Church in Bethel, MO. The SWAT program was also held in the summer, 2000. The mission trip that year was to Milwaukee for a week of inner-city mission work with YouthWorks. 25 Over the years, there have been several classes for young adults. The Seekers Class was organized in 1984, while Rev. Tim McClain was pastor. Another group (19 people) went to work with the Mountain T.O.P. organization in Tennessee to do construction projects, witnessing and provide meaningful worship. Two college students, JD Briscoe and Paul Jordan, provided the weekly worship lessons. LYG supported World Vision through the 30-Hour Famine and had fund raisers such as a Cake Walk, Craft Show, Candle Sales, Sub-sandwich Sales, Valentine Dinner, Pizza Supper, Health Fair Food, Volleyball Tournament, Car Wash/Pepsi Wagon, Auction Food, Yard Sales, Domino’s Pizza Cards, Wal-Mart Grant, Matching Grant, and Letter Donations.

Fundraisers included the 30-hour Famine, a volleyball day and pizza supper. They also had work days to repaint and decorate the youth room in the Christian Church. Mariah and Drew Lock were the leaders in 2006 and 2007. In 2008, LYG held many fundraising events (sub-sandwich sales, spaghetti dinner, soup cook-off, Mexican dinner and clean-up the city reservoir).
